
We are happy to share our newest paper, “Genetic Engineering of Carbon Monoxide Dehydrogenases Produces Distinct Autotrophic Phenotypes in Clostridium autoethanogenum,” published on July 13 in ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering. This work was led by our postdoctoral researchers Kurshedaktar Majibullah Shaikh and Kristina Reinmets, who genetically engineered two carbon monoxide dehydrogenases (CODHs) in C. autoethanogenum: the bifunctional CODH (acsA), which is essential for autotrophic growth, and the highly abundant monofunctional CODH (cooS1). The generated strains were characterised in autotrophic conditions batch and continuous chemostat cultures. Their findings highlight the important role of CODHs in shaping autotrophic metabolism and identify potential targets for the rational engineering of acetogen cell factories, contributing to the development of more efficient and sustainable gas fermentation processes.
